The 3.6x zoom is equal to 82.5-300mm on a traditional 35mm camera giving you plenty of long range focus for your money when you purchase the Nikon Nikkor 55-200mm f/4-5.6G ED AF-S DX. It is considered one of the best entry level telephoto lenses on the market today, and the shorter end of the lens remains practical for closer shots and it is light enough to be carried round with your camera at all times. Although it is not short enough for true general use it certainly works well as a lens for relatively close up work as well as work at a distance.
